Best friends compete for the title of "Miss Twirl" (similar to a Miss America contest with the primary category of competition being -- what else? -- twirling!). The real test, however, is whether their friendship will survive through the contest with the pressure and interference from their parents to win.

Clearly inspired by 'Smile' but without the satirical bent, this offers a long look at a national talent competition for pert teen twirlers, showing the the hard work needed to make the grade and the stresses put upon the girls and their parents as they compete for the big prize. Packed with spangly costumes and gleaming smiles, the contestants are delightful, even when displaying their dubious talents. The adults include Haid as the nervy dad of equally edgy Moran, and Stevens , as the mom of lovely Whelchel, willing to go any lengths to help her daughter, even sleeping with nerdy judge Tobin. Locklear is a standout competitor in the supporting cast. Kinky Friedman wrote a tribute theme song thathe sings in a barroom scene. A very sweet, fun movie with an uncynical attitude to the sport and a sunny disposition shown by the bright cast of young women.
