Gianni Cavina plays an especially successful university professor who drives his luxurious Bentley into the auto grill built by his father for a late night snack. He's on the phone. He's been on the phone for the whole film so far and seems to have no intention of ending his call even when he is ordering and paying for his soup. When he sits down to eat it - a dish that does look very different from the one he had on his tray - it's become cold and he asks for it to be reheated whilst he goes to the toilet and has a startling encounter with "Guido". Then he returns to find he is now sharing his soup with a smiling black man. Who is this fella and why is he helping himself to his food? Should he kick up a fuss or just go on sharing? Then something even more bizarre happens when the waitress (Mariangela Giordano) turns up. What exactly has occured? Once you've watched the end of his, I think you'll appreciate more the rest of it and it does pose a few quite interesting, and entertaining, questions for both the academic and for us, too, as it heads in a direction I wasn't expecting at all.
